Psychological counselling

EDUCatt offers a Psychological Counselling Service to students at Università Cattolica campuses in Milan, Brescia, Piacenza, and Rome. The psychotherapists working within the service provide support to help students understand and address personal, family-related, and academic difficulties. The primary goal is to help students gain a better understanding of their concerns. If a longer-term, more structured course of treatment is deemed necessary, the psychotherapist will refer the student to specialized public or private healthcare services available in the local area.

The psychological counselling process begins with an initial orientation and assessment session, at the end of which, the therapist may propose to the student a treatment agreement that defines the objectives, methods, and duration of the counselling process, ensuring a mutual, informed, and transparent commitment.

The “typical” counselling process includes five follow-up sessions. In particular cases, these initial six sessions may be supplemented by up to four additional sessions for further assessment and support. If necessary, the psychological work may also be integrated with a number of psychiatric consultations (up to a maximum of five). At the end of the counselling process, the student may be referred to a course of psychotherapy, entrusted to the care of a specialist service, or it may be determined that the counselling alone has enabled the student to regain a satisfactory psychological balance.

Counselling sessions and psychiatric consultations are held, upon the therapist’s recommendation, at regular intervals, generally on a weekly basis, in the time slot (day of the week and time) selected by each student at the time of booking. As a rule, that day and time will remain unchanged throughout the entire counselling process.

The possibility of online consultations is exceptionally reserved for students who are unable to come to the University due to a certified illness, disability, or another serious impediment.

The counselling process may be undertaken only once during the student’s entire academic career.

The Psychological Counselling Service is available to all studentsat Università Cattolica enrolled at any academic level (Bachelor’s, Master’s, first- and second-level Master’s programs, PhD programs, etc.). It is specifically intended for students who recognize that they are experiencing genuine psychological distress and are motivated to address it.

The counselling pathway can be accessed only once during the academic career at Università Cattolica[MP1] . If you interrupt or complete a counselling program – even if not all of the available sessions have been used– you cannot request to resume it later.

It is not recommended to request counselling if:

  • you cannot commit to attending regular sessions for at least one month (for example, if you are about to leave for a study-abroad program, withdraw from the university, or transfer to another institution, etc.).
  • you are already undergoing another course of psychological or psychiatric treatment.

The Psychological Counselling Service is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing severe and persistent mental distress requiring urgent assistance, do not request an appointment through the counselling service. Instead, contact the appropriate emergency services immediately. Call the national emergency number 112, explain your situation, and follow the instructions provided.
